On Sunday we went bright and early to Basingstoke to sing at the Anvil Theatre in the regional heats of Choir of the Year 2016, having been selected to audition after sending in our application form. There were some amazing choirs there, and we were privileged to hear some of the best children and youth choirs in the country as well as some fantastic adult auditioned and non auditioned ensembles. We had 8 minutes on stage to perform two songs to impress the judges. We chose Sittin’ on the Dock of the Bay and Mr Sandman as two very contrasting and challenging pieces, and afterwards the judges gave feedback while we were still on stage, which was scary!! They were luckily very complimentary about our style and especially about our engaging with the audience, and gave us tips on how to progress.

After an entertaining workshop on BeatBoxing, the judges came back to announce who had enough points (points being awarded for style, content, difficulty, musicality etc) to go through to National Selection and we were thrilled to hear our name called! We were the only adult choir to go through from our audition session. This doesn’t mean we automatically get to the next audition stage, as the adjudicators have to go through all the choirs on the list, review the films and pick out the best for selection, but we couldn’t have done any better on the day, and even if we go no further we are absolutely delighted with the result.
